Digital Art and Design I Teaching Assistant

From now until the end of the semester I will be blogging about my experiences TA'ing for my professors Digital Art and Design class. I am pretty excited about it. At the end of each week I will have a blog sharing my experiences, things that I learned, liked/didnt like, challenges, etc.

Museum of Fine Arts

This weekend I went to the Museum of Fine Arts. I only have three minutes until class, therefore I will explain it all later.

Sitting by any body of water and letting the serenading sound draw a masterpiece with my pencil.

Empty Notebooks. You can write any story using any character; any action; any destination; anything. The world will never be short on notebook paper.

Body Hair. I love guys that have body hair. There is nothing better than running your hands up and down a furry stomach.

Clean nails.

Nice teeth.

Brushing my tongue.

Pretending I am in a movie while taking a shower.

Making the "pizza" while skiing.

The interstate, it feels more like home than home itself.

Making friends on the highway.

Going to shows and closing my eyes in the crowd and letting the music free my soul.

Thinking. I think too much. I read into situations way too much.

Expressing myself. I dont hold back from telling people how I feel. It can be intimidating.

Sitting down by the lake at night. Its the only time i can accept reality.

Going to Stewarts and buying comfort supplies.

Leaving this town. I have too much history here, its time to make some elsewhere.

Watching IFC and Sundance.

The feeling of mud between my toes.

Being around large amounts of people.

Snuggling with the poodles and kissing their bellies.

Making a mess. Im very good at it.

Sneezing.

The sound of rocks going through a vacuum.

Chewing Ice.

Making out. Yet, who doesnt?

Using the words "Facet, Spectrum" and "heinous".

New Jersey.

Change. Its so addicting.

Facts:

I get over things relatively quickley.

I have 4 tattoos, there is nothing more facinating that putting permanent art on my body.

Personality is a beautiful thing to fall in love with.

Men believe in love at first sight more than women.

Autism is not a disease and isnt a result of bad water or bad parenting.

The saying "You're about as boring as they come" makes everyone laugh.

A smile can make anyone's day better.

I drag on my literary masterpieces.

I give everyone a chance.

Allowing yourself to cry at least once a week can feel so good, even if its the result of watching a sad movie.

Waking up excited every day will throw away regrets.

Senior Art Show Review

Senior Show

The senior art show was a great success. It was one of the most interesting senior art shows I have seen yet. It was also so wonderful seeing all of my friends succeed. My two favorite works of art were Emily Abramovich’s and Terrence Henk’s pieces.

Emily had a very powerful art piece about the history of her family. She also incorporated how the idea of a photograph has changed over time. She talked about how back in history people were “forced to smile and strike a pose” whereas today a snap shot can catch a great moment in milliseconds. Her photographs were printed on paper that she had made herself and were strung together and hung from the ceiling. The pictures told a story and showed how different life was decades ago. What I love about photos is that they tell a story, but a different story to every person. Another great facet of photography is that usually it doesn’t show the bad parts of life or family, only the good. It’s a reminder that through the tough times there is always family no matter what. The piece gave off a great feeling.

Terrence used his love for the contrast between nature and technology to show a painting of down town Oneonta illuminated with the haunting appeal of a projected video of ghost looking cars driving down the road. I really enjoyed this piece because for my senior project I want to incorporate digital with an old sculptural material such as bronze. In this case Terrence could fight against Duchamp’s idea of art only being 2 things put together because along with the canvas and paint he has a time piece that fits perfectly together with the painting which is also ever changing. The painting was of a very large scale and was the first thing the viewer saw when walking into the gallery.

This senior art show was a great success. I went back for a second, third, and fourth time to look at and examine all of the astounding pieces of art. I love how my generation of artists looks at ideas so differently than my parents’ generation. We are more comfortable expressing ourselves and allowing ourselves to make whatever statement we feel. I noticed that photography was the most common medium during this show which is also interesting because of the advances photography has made within the last few decades. Each artist was successful in expressing what they truly felt and I just hope my senior project will be as successful was this show.

I think I found a picture manipulated just for the internet at my house. Someone knows my deal and made this for me, whether they know it or not.
I want to learn to create sculptures using photoshop or some other program which allows that. I also need to learn how to perfectly manipulate shadows. Im really into that idea right now.

Here are a couple I think are really awesome. Really cool effects and something I would want to do.

Elements of Balance

I went to the Elements of Balance exhibit in the foreman gallery on 2/13/09. It was composed of 3 different artists: Lynn Estomin, Hee Sook Kim, and Niki Ketchman. As I approached the gallery there was an impatient line of Hartwick art students waiting to get some “grub” and head into the show. Previously, before the opening, as I would walk by the glass wall of the gallery, I would wonder what the nig sculpture on the upper level was made of, who made it, and why?
The first artist was Lynn Estomin. Her work was composed of photographs, although, looked historically incorrect, were very easy to look at. They had a relaxing and silent aura about them. After looking at the photographs I read her artists statement. The main idea behind her work was to exploit a “continuing statement on the beauty of nature and the fragile relationship between humanity and the environment”. Her work seemed to link the magnificence of our natural geography with the wonder and tale of ancient art. Her project began over 10 years ago while she was hiking through New Mexico. She combined art from two different areas of the world. My favorite piece of hers was titled Tree Fingers which was archival giclee print on watercolor paper. I didn’t know what giclee print was so I looked it up and I read that Images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. The giclee printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction. Also that, giclee prints are advantageous to artists who do not find it feasible to mass produce their work, but want to reproduce their art as needed, or on-demand. The reason why I liked this particular piece is because it displayed every natural element of the earth all in one photo. It started with water and then moved to rich soil then to desert and ending with beautiful mountains in the back. It looked so real as if there really was a place that had huge sand dunes surrounded by mountains and with clear water just a few yards away.

The next pieces I looked at were by Niki Ketchman. I am a sculpture and can appreciate most sculptures but I really was not fond of her vertical sculptures. They seemed to represent minimalism in my eyes, which I am not a fan of; yet, I absolutely loved her Inside Out sculpture which was placed on the lower level of the gallery. I couldn’t fathom how tedious it must have been to compose a structure made of 2 inch steel rods. I was very impressed. Another aspect of the sculpture I enjoyed was how on one side of the sculpture the mesh was completely blank, yet when you walked to the other side and looked through the mesh had black leave spray painted, looking as if they were falling down. It was almost an illusion of the sort. What I also found to be really cool was that Niki Ketchman went to graduate school at Montclair State University in New Jersey, which was where I spent most of my childhood and still visit a lot to this day. Also I plan on attending Montclair State for art school after Hartwick, so I already felt a connection with her as an artist. Niki started her art career drawing with ink and then turned her drawings into 3-D wire forms. From there she created large bodies of sculptures made by crimping and bending aluminum wire. I can relate to this as well, considering I my concentration is sculpture I learned to use wire to make minor sculptures before I had the access to casting. Wire is great to use as a structure and to show texture. Aluminum has actually become my favorite medium to use. Niki was inspired by artists such as Eva Hesse who is known for her pioneering work in materials such as latex, fiberglass, and plastics, Martin Puryear who works in media such as wood, stone, tar, and wire, and his work is a union of minimalism and traditional crafts, and Louise Bourgeois, who is best known for her Cells, Spiders and various drawings, books and sculptures.
Lastly, Hee Sook Kim said she created to share her experiences she’s had in America filtered by the culture she grew up in. I was not too fond of her work so I didn’t spend a lot of time looking at it. In her artist statement she said she was influenced by old Korean paintings. She used Suhi ink and calligraphic brush strokes.
